Dhan Bahadur Rawat, a resident of Koldada in Birendranagar-2, Surkhet, lives with his wife, son, and sister. Despite having completed higher secondary education, sustaining his family through agriculture proved to be was a significant challenge for him. A year ago, Dhan Bahadur leased about 7 ropani of land to start farming. He built a tunnel for tomato cultivation and two mushroom houses. On the remaining land, he planted vegetables such as cucumber, gourd, ladyfinger, beans, and chili using traditional farming methods. However, despite cultivating in such a large area, the returns were minimal, and he struggled to make a profit. His turning point came when he joined the Farmer Field School (FFS) group formed under the Skill Up! Project—"Empowering Vulnerable Youth through Competencies and Decent Income for Sustainable Perspectives"—implemented by CEAPRED and supported by Welthungerhilfe. He was selected as the chairperson of the Sundari FFS in Birendranagar-2, Surkhet.
Dhan Bahadur participated in a two-day FFS Leader Farmer orientation, which introduced him to climate-resilient agricultural practices. Since then, he has adopted improved techniques on off season production, selection of suitable crops and varities, adapting nutrient smart/ water smart/ cropping smart technologies for commercial organic production . Such as, preparation of Bokasi Mal, Jhol Mal, Waste water collection pond, improved staking, appropriate spacing for planting, raise bed system etc. Now, he is grateful for the support from the Skill Up project. Dhan Bahadur practices modern commercial organic farming with confidence. In the recent rainy season, he sold vegetables worth approximately NPR 70,000. He is highly satisfied with his progress and remains committed to continuing organic farming as a sustainable source of income.
